My girlfriend's sister's going to look at this car today. I'd go with to double check, but I'm in NYC, and shes in Burlington, VT. It says gaskets / timing belt done. She should go to a mechanic, but I don't know if she actually will. High mileage, but cheap. What should she ask about?

Edit:
She sent me a picture. Doesn't look like rust to me.

Looks pretty good! Take it to a mechanic before she buys - that can prevent a lot of headaches.

Rule of thumb: Always bring/go to a mechanic.

Yup that's what I told her. she's going from Burlington to New Hampshire, so she doesn't know anyone around there. Worst case, what are the failure points on these cars besides the head gaskets?

Yup. Told her that, as it's exactly what I'd do purchasing any used car. Unfortunately, I don't know if she'll be able to as it's further away from her than I thought.

Tell her to try giving these guys a call and make an appointment. Any regular mechanic shop will do. It's not hard to do. Then tell the seller to drive her over there for a quick inspection before final sale.
If they give it the clear, take the car. :)

A 10 year old, 140k miles Subaru in New England, the first thing that comes to my mind (after timing belt, apparently done) is rust, then CV joints/boots. The photos are all topside, and look okay, with the exception of that spot at the back of each rear wheel arch where it meets the bumper plastic. Best to crawl under (wear old clothes, or coveralls, or have a piece of cardboard, or something) and get a really good look to see if it's solid, or a sea of orange Fe2O3, and see what the CV joints/boots look like (new, or original and probably about to need replacing).

Doesn't say whether it had timing belt done. Could be the alternator/accessory belts. Check that to make sure. 33 mpg? Never heard of an AWD "Buru" that got much over 23.

Nah it said gaskets / T.belt. I told her to ask about those two things. Yeah the MPG I'm sure is bull.
